Advanced Educational Appraisal (3-0) Analysis, evaluation, administration and interpretation of standardized achievement, diagnostic and adaptive behavior measures. Group Counseling (3-0) Description of the history, principles, theories, and dynamics of group counseling. Emphasis on the open communication process, curative factors, stages of group development, and the role of therapeutic leadership, to include techniques, skills, and styles unique to group process. Application of Assessment for the Delivery of Instruction for "At Risk" students (3-0) Pre-internship course. Includes supervised practice of testing procedures, writing full individual evaluations and side by side comparison of federal and state regulations for identifying and serving at risk students in special education. Prerequisites: EDPC 5334, EDPC 5336, EDPC 5337, and EDPC 5344 each with a grade of "B" or better.
This course examines the foundations of the major assumptions and theories underlying current, leading cognitive and behavioral therapies. Major theorists and their models are explored. This course is designed as an introduction to play therapy with an emphasis on developing counseling skills using play as a method of communication and understanding. Students will learn the rationale for the use of play therapy, the various theoretical approaches to play therapy, and the techniques used for effective play therapy. Students will also complete a supervised experiential practicum component. Prerequisites: EDPC 5317 and EDPC 5341 with a grade of B or higer, EDPC 5362 or instructor approval.
Practical application of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) model in a school setting. Students are required to complete 300 clock hours of on-site school counseling experience. Prerequisites: Completion of 36 credits including all foundational coursework and EDPC 5338 with a grade of "B" or better.

Internship for Educational Diagnostics (0-0-3) Supervised experience in public schools working with certified diagnosticians. Experiences include: completing comprehensive assessments, preparing written reports of assessments and other required paperwork, attending ARDs and presenting test data to educators and families. Periodic meeting with university faculty to establish progress will be required. The National Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) requires a 60-hour program for national accreditation. The course helps to meet not only the 60-hour program requirement for accreditation but also CACREP supervised counseling internship requirement of 700 hours. These hours are split across three courses: 1. EDPC 5369 - Practicum (required 100 hrs.), 2. EDPC 5376 - SC Internship I (required 300 hrs.) 3. EDPC 5377 - SC Internship II (300 hrs.). These experiences provide more hands-on, in-depth, impactful counseling services to student-clients who represent the ethnic and demographic make-up of the El Paso community.

A mandatory course for school counseling students. A goal of the course: extend and deepen the clinical experience for school counselors in-training in the real world. The intern is given field-based opportunities under supervision for an academic year. The course is a total of 3 credits and 300 clock hours spent in counseling service in a school counseling setting.
