Academic and Research Facilities

The property, buildings, and facilities owned or controlled by The University of Texas at El Paso are not open to the general public for assemblies, speeches, or other activities, and as such their usage by students and employees are subject to reasonable regulation.

No person, organization, group, association, or corporation can use property, buildings, or facilities owned or controlled by The University of Texas at El Paso for any purpose other than in the course of the regular programs or activities related to the role and mission of the University, unless authorized by the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System. Any authorized use must be conducted in compliance with the provisions of the Regents’ Rules and Regulations, the rules and regulations of The University of Texas at El Paso, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Border Biomedical Research Center 

The overall goal of the BBRC is to develop, grow and sustain the extant infrastructure and programs, as well as to recruit, train, and develop cancer scientists and health practitioners to promote high quality cancer research and to translate meaningful findings back to the community. Through mentoring, pilot programs, and enhanced research infrastructure we seek to promote investigator competitiveness in acquiring extramural funding to address regional disease disparities. We also seek to generate an environment that creates pipelines for undergraduate and graduate students into biomedical careers and serves as a major point of entry into the nation’s biomedical workforce.

UTEP has a strong tradition of involving undergraduates in research, scholarly and creative activities (URSCA). Students are currently working on numerous projects in every college and school. Center for the Advancement of Space Safety and Mission Assurance Research

The CASSMAR mission is to enable human spaceflight through interdisciplinary research to identify, characterize, and mitigate the leading risks to safety and mission assurance. By forging partnerships with government and commercial spaceflight organizations, CASSMAR serves as an example for interdisciplinary, cross-functional and sustainable research at UTEP with a focus on the enhancement of the safety and reliability for human spaceflight. CASSMAR directly contributes to the education of UTEP’s 21st century demographic into the next generation of competent, diverse, and enthusiastic space engineers and scientists specializing in risk assessment and mitigation.

Center for Community Engagement

The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) serves as UTEP’s resource center for faculty, staff, and students who are interested in engaging in the community through a variety of programs and activities. The CCE connects the resources of the university to help meet community priorities through maintaining healthy and mutually beneficial relationships with community partners. CCE collaborates with faculty members and community leaders teaching, research, and/or service activities, offering a networking base that helps connect faculty and students with community partners to conduct enhanced student learning and research activities aimed at serving the Paso Del Norte region.

Center for Environmental Resource Management

CERM provides university-wide leadership and coordination for environmental research, education, and outreach activities. The scope of the issues that the center addresses spans from the local community to state, regional, national and international. Priority areas of the center are: Environmental Health, Water Resources, Desert and Wetland Ecology, Air Quality, and Environmental Education.

While CERM is recognized within the University, it is also recognized across Texas receiving an award during the Texas Water Development Board's regular meeting in Austin, promoting rainwater harvesting and educating the public about the benefits of such harvesting. Other recognitions include a news segment published by CNN relating to El Paso's treatment of sewage water due to climate change drought. 

In addition to the community and school efforts CERM provides. CERM supports and manages the Rio Bosque Wetlands Park, a 372-acre City of El Paso Park. A wetlands and riverside forest with a diverse partnership with a multitude of valuable ecosystems once found in the river valley.

Center for Interdisciplinary Health Research and Evaluation (CHS Reached)

The Center facilitates the development and translation of clinical, biomedical and behavioral research to improve the health of populations living along the US-Mexico border region.

The Center maintains a repository of health-related information to facilitate the transfer of health research information to border researchers and policy makers. All branches of government and private foundations can use the expertise of the Center's researchers for the development of health policies and to help establish funding priorities and allocations for the border region.

The Center provides assistance to community-based organizations and private and public agencies in the solicitation, management, and evaluation of health-related grants from federal and state agencies and foundations to help improve the prevention and treatment outcomes of chronic and infectious diseases among border populations.

Center for Inland Desalination Systems

CIDS staff and faculty will advance the science and technology of desalination and innovative water treatment through the integration of students in research projects for publications, patents, and theses/dissertations; supporting local, regional, state, federal, and international agencies; and contributing towards UTEP's recognition as a national research university with a 21st century demographic.

Center for Inter-American Border Studies

The Center is a focus for UTEP activities concerning Borders, Latin America, and the Caribbean. While an emphasis on our local region is interwoven through most UTEP activities, CIBS creates a central point of leadership and support for other units in academic programs, research, and outreach activities.

Center for Advanced Material Research

CMR is the next iteration of CVR Nanotech lab established in 2007. CMR is focused on bringing in cutting edge technology in the field of coatings and thin films for next generation radar, optoelectronic devices, sensors, MEMS to name a few. CMR has been striving to strike a balance between best research practices while elevating the educational expertise in the valley with its numerous outreach activities, lab tours for middle school and high school students.

Center for Law & Human Behavior

The Center for Law and Human Behavior is a focal point at The University of Texas at El Paso for extramural research in the social and behavioral sciences. At the CLHB, faculty interested in pursuing funded research will find the expertise and support they need to help them refine their ideas, craft competitive proposals, and manage their grants once they are awarded.
The CLHB also serves as a community of scholars and helps identify common interests and research themes among faculty and students for multidisciplinary research and inquiry. 
The CLHB strives to develop relationships with government and non-profit stakeholders in areas such as criminal justice, behavioral health, substance abuse, and program evaluation to help improve the delivery of services to citizens in the Paso Del Norte region and beyond.

Center for Transportation Infrastructure Systems

CTIS through its faculty and staff works to generate and share knowledge in different aspects of transportation infrastructure. CTIS will recruit, retain, and graduate individuals with high professional and ethical standards to work in government and private organizations. CTIS accomplishes its missions by submitting highly-competitive proposals, engaging in innovative research that creates synergy among faculty, staff, students, and funding agencies. CTIS faculty and staff work together within the University, and with other collaborators internationally to engage in multidisciplinary opportunities for both students and faculty.

Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness

Since 2014, the Hunt Institute for Global Competitiveness at The University of Texas at El Paso has provided economic analysis of the Paso del Norte Region that includes the binational communities of El Paso, Texas; Las Cruces, N.M.; and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The mission of the Hunt Institute is to produce high-quality market analysis tools that can strengthen regional and binational cross-border economic and social development.

Research Institute for Manufacturing and Engineering Systems

RIMES was created in 1995 as the Institute for Manufacturing and Materials Management (IM3). We have recently renamed the Institute while maintaining its focus on Manufacturing and Materials Management. The institute has also evolved and taken the lead in focusing on the research of new knowledge of systems and its applications to Manufacturing and Engineering Systems.

As part of The University of Texas at El Paso, the Institute is committed to education. Members of the staff teach classes, sponsor research at the University, and are encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences and lectures. The institute has a long history of collaboration with private industry. We are committed to continue and expand this synergy.

Center for History Teaching & Learning

The Center for History Teaching & Learning is an internationally-renowned and award-winning advocate for improving history education. Established in 2009, the Center seeks to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning in history and to apply that scholarship in our classrooms, in teacher education, and in the community. Minority AIDS Research Center (MARC)

Vision of MARC is to remove HIV/AIDS-related disparities and inequities among minority populations around the globe while simultaneously demonstrating research and teaching excellence through access and educational opportunity to the people of the El Paso region and beyond.

Mission of MARC is sustainable education in basic and applied health sciences in combination with translational and clinical research leading to behavioral and technological innovation that directly leads to better graduating health practitioners and biomedical professionals while simultaneously reducing HIV/AIDS-related disparities and inequities among minority populations.

The Borderlands Digital Humanities Center

The Center advances intellectual inquiry across disciplines, anchored in the humanities and dedicated to engagement with communities throughout the U.S. – Mexico Borderlands. The Center pursues and supports bi-national, multi-cultural projects on digital platforms that honor the peoples, environments, and experiences of the Borderlands and beyond and reaffirm the role of human interpretation in the age of big data. Center for Free Enterprise

The Center for Free Enterprise (C4FE) is an educational and research center housed in The University of Texas (UTEP) Woody L. Hunt College of Business. The Center was established in 2023 and advances research and education on the economic and social benefits of a free enterprise market environment.

The mission of the Center for Free Enterprise is to provide a transformative experience in educating students on the role of a free enterprise system in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship that addresses economic disparities and social mobility.
