Bachelor of Music

Music with Teacher Certification

The Bachelor of Music degree with Teacher Certification prepares students to work as instrumental, vocal, guitar, and keyboard educators in public and private school settings. Students also have the potential to participate in other areas of music, such as performing, composing, or maintaining a private studio. Students who complete this program may also pursue graduate degrees in all areas of music.

Music Performance

Graduates in the music performance degree develop expertise in the performance of music, music pedagogy, music history, music theory, and entrepreneurship. Most graduates go on to pursue careers performing with professional orchestras, opera companies, choirs, and bands, freelance work, and developing a private teaching studio. Most graduates will go on to pursue a graduate degree in music performance or related field.  

Music Theory and Composition

The Bachelor of Music degree in Theory and Composition prepares students for graduate study (M.M., D.M.A./Ph.D.) in theory and composition. Students who pursue these advanced degrees are credentialed for academic positions in higher education. They may also pursue work as free-lance composers/arrangers, public school teachers, or as performing musicians or ensemble directors. The intellectual rigor of the degree also prepares students for careers in a variety of non-music disciplines.

Students will develop the following skills:

  1. Confidence: Be self-assured through appreciating your own talents, abilities, skills, and qualities.
  2. Leadership: Step up, think, and act critically and creatively to bring others together to accomplish a common task.
  3. Organization: Use resources effectively and efficiently in order to stay focused on different tasks.
  4. Pedagogy: Co-create knowledge and skills with students of different backgrounds.
  5. Social skills: Effectively use body language, verbal and non-verbal communication skills and personal appearance to communicate and interact with others.
  6. Teamwork: Participate as an effective, efficient member of a group in order to meet a common goal.

Future music educators have the opportunity to inspire young students in music musical expression and creativity.

Music Performance

Students will develop the following skills:

  1. Entrepreneurship: Examples of entrepreneurship in the field of music performance include marketing, creating digital portfolios, and interacting with potential clients on social media.  
  2. Listening: In the field of music performance, listening is one of the core essential skills.  Whether it is listening carefully to a conductor to perform music exactly as instructed or listening across an ensemble to match volume, rhythm, and style, music performance graduates must have excellent listening skills.

  3. Pedagogy: Music performance graduates are well-trained in pedagogy and often will maintain an active studio of students.

  4. Social skills: Music performance graduates must posses excellent social skills to be able to attract new audiences, maintain a good rapport with contractors, and to ensure that they work well with others in chamber music and larger music organizations.  

  5. Teamwork: Music performance graduates have to have the ability to work well with others in chamber and large group settings.  These situations often have a variety of dynamics requiring graduates to be able to serve as a group leader or be prepared to follow the lead of a section leader on any given performance.  

Graduates of the Music Performance degree at UTEP have the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently through verbal, written, and musical means.  

Graduates of the Music Performance degree at UTEP are highly adaptable and able to work in a variety of environments and situations.  Graduates are trained to work on their own or as part of team, and are ready to work in a variety of mediums.

Graduates of the Music Performance degree are highly trained in problem solving skills and are ready take on large scale projects on their own or as part of a team.  

Graduates in the Music Performance degree are well-trained as critical thinkers which enables them to maintain a private studio or work as a consultant in public/private schools.

Music Theory and Composition

Students will develop the following skills:

  1. Critical thinking: Analyze and evaluate issues in order to solve problems and develop informed opinions
  2. Leadership: Step up, think, and act critically and creatively to bring others together to accomplish a common task
  3. Problem-solving: Find solutions to difficult or complex issues

  6. Time management: Prioritize goals and organize time to be more productive and efficient

The study of music theory involves the perception and understanding of complex structures. and thus helps students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. The composition component of the degree hones creativity and the ability to express ideas in an abstract language.
