Research and Critical Writing: [TCCN ENGL 1302] Instruction in incorporating research into writing, with emphasis on (1) focusing questions, (2) using academic methods and resources, (3) learning to comprehend, analyze, synthesize, and critically evaluate materials, (4) shaping materials into coherent pieces of persuasive discourse appropriate to the writer's purpose and audience, and (5) understanding the logic and forms of documentation. (Non-native English speakers may substitute ESOL 1312).
Writing About Literature (3-0) A research and writing course in the analysis and interpretation of literature, progressing from basic exegesis of diction and syntax to the broad range of critical and stylistic approaches to literary works. Strongly suggested as preparation for junior and senior level courses in literature. Required of all English majors in lieu of ENGL 1312. Strongly advised for all ENGL 1312 with department approval. ENGL 1313 fulfills the catalog requirements for ENGL 1312. Prerequisite: ENGL 1311 or ENGL 1611.
English Literature: [TCCN ENGL 2322] A study of British literature from its beginning to the late 1700s.
English Literature: [TCCN ENGL 2323] A study of British literature from the late 1700s to the present.
Introduction to American Fiction: [TCCN ENGL 2342] Contemporary American works as well as the historical development of the short story and the novel.
Introduction to American Drama: [TCCN ENGL 2343] Study of the nature and variety of drama through examination of the contemporary theatre and its historical development.
Introduction to Linguistics (3-0) Introduction to modern language studies with emphasis on contemporary as opposed to historical linguistics.

The Academic Vocabulary of English (3-0) The study of English vocabulary with emphasis on the academic lexicon. Systematic review of Greek and Latin elements in English. Close attention to derivational patterns and lexical families. Prerequisite: ENGL 1312 or ENGL 1313 or ESOL 1312 each with a grade of "C" or better.
Children's Literature (3-0) A survey of the major genres of literature for children from the seventeenth century to the present, including traditional to contemporary poetry, folk and fairy tales, fantasy, realistic fiction, biography, and informational books. Prerequisites: ENGL 1312 or ENGL 1313 or ESOL 1312. Junior standing recommended.
Early Modern British Drama A study of selected genres if early modern British drama, excluding Shakespeare, from 1485-1660.
Multimodal and Hybrid Forms in the English Language Arts (3-0): A study of the concepts of text and intertextuality as they relate to the teaching of English in secondary schools. Prerequisite: ENGL 1312 or ENGL 1313 or ESOL 1312 with a grade of "C" or better. 3 hr credit.

Writing Processes of Children (3-0) Current theory and practice in K-8 writing development; Review of applicable rhetorical and linguistic theories; evaluation and assessment of written work; relationships between reading and composition. Prerequisite: ENGL 1312 or ENGL 1313 or ESOL 1312. Junior standing recommended.
Teaching Composition and Literature in Secondary Schools (3-0) Current theory and practice in teaching writing and literature in the secondary schools; review of application research along with practices for teaching literature and the composing process. Field experience is required. Prerequisite: ENGL 1312 or ENGL 1313 or ESOL 1312. Junior standing recommended.
Directed Study (0-0-3) Individual directed study on an approved topic, to be taught with thw consent of the professor and with the approval of the department chairperson. Restricted to major: ENGL. Prerequsite: Department approval. Junior standing recommended.
