This course is an introduction to human communication variation across the lifespan and across cultures. Multicultural aspects of communication are highlighted as well as contemporary/ethical issues of communication and professional pathway options.

General Phonetics (3-0) Principles of speech sound production, their acoustic correlates, and their perception. Instruction in the use of the international phonetic alphabet is included with application to communication disorders.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech Mechanism (3-0) The anatomical and physiological bases of speech. Emphasis is placed on respiration, phonation, resonation, articulation, and deglutition.

Disorders of Articulation and Phonology (3-0) A study of disorders of articulation and phonology in children and adults including characteristics, causes, and procedures for diagnosis and treatment.
Language Disorders in Pre-School Children (3-0) Theoretical foundations, diagnosis, and intervention for language impairments in pre-school populations. Multicultural issues related to language disorders in this population are discussed.
Principles of Clinical Management (3-0) Preparation of diagnostic reports, treatment plans, and other written documentation of client performance and progress. The treatment sequence, ethical decision making, universal precautions for inflection prevention, and the team approach to treatment are also discussed.

Fundamentals of Speech Science This course will address the scientific principles that underlie normal speech production. Basic principles regarding how the speech signal is generated, properties and interpretation of the acoustic waveform, acoustic phonetics, and theories of speech perception will be covered. Equipment and methods used to measure and analyze respiratory, laryngeal, articulatory and acoustic components of speech will be discussed. Students' projects will include the application of speech instrumentation. Some discussion of the application of concepts to various speech disorders will also be included.
Neural Bases of Speech and Language (3-0) Study of neuroanatomical and neurophysiological mechanisms related to speech and language.
Independent Study in Speech, Hearing and Language Disorders (3-0) Individual directed study. May be repeated when topic varies. Prerequisite: Completion of 12 semester hours of SHLD coursework with a GPA and department approval.
