Multicultural Influences on Health Care and Research (3-0) Focus on the influence of various cultures (e.g. racial, ethnic, socio-economic, age related and geographic) on health care delivery and research. Cultural patterns, beliefs and expectations related to health care and health outcomes are explored and analyzed. Research methods, recruitment of subjects, data collection procedures and instrumentation are analyzed in relationship to various cultural groups. Priority needs for health care and research in various cultural groups are compared.

Interdisciplinary Research This course introduces IHS PhD students to the complexities of interdisciplinary research in the health sciences using a "case studies" approach. Students will be required to find, read, synthesize and summarize published research from each of the research programs studied, and published research from their designated "research area". As students complete the work required for this course they will also improve their professional skills in searching the literature, reading and synthesizing theoretical content and empirical reports, preparing presentations, and writing doctoral level papers.

Psychometics in Health Sciences This course introduces students to the principles of measurement as they apply to the most commonly used types of measurement instruments used in health sciences research. Through lectures, application, discussion and group exercises, students will learn classical testing theory, the steps and logic of test construction; test reliability and test validity; theories and applications of factor analytic techniques; how to evaluate test items; and how to critically evaluate tests and rating scales for use in research. Students who complete this course will be able to apply principles learned in a variety of research applications requiring scaled measurement of human characteristics and responses.

Seminar in Health Professions Education: Academic and Administrative Roles and Responsibilities (3-0) Issues, roles and responsibilities of faculty and administrative appointments in academic and health science centers will be discussed.
