Survey of Music Theory (3-0) Theory of the common practice period in western music. Includes figured bass realization, aural skills, harmonic analysis, common-practice forms, and 20th-century techniques. Will not count for Master of Music Degree. Prerequisite: Graduate Music Theory Placement Exam.

MUST 5317.  Analytic Techniques.  

Study of the application of music theory terminology and concepts in the analysis of works from the music literature, and of how this analysis informs performance and interpretation of these works.

Analysis of Tonal Music (3-0) A three hour course for advanced theory and composition students, focusing on analysis of common practice forms with chromatic harmony and modulation. Analysis of Modern Music (3-0) A three hour course for advanced theory and composition students, focusing on analysis of works which represent styles unique to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including atonality, neoclassicism, impressionism, minimalism, film music and more. Restricted to major: MUSE and MUSP. Prerequisite: A passing score on the Graduate Music Theory Placement Exam or a grade of A or B in MUST 5313, Survey of Music Theory, and department approval.
