Epidemiology for Public Health Professionals. Core course considers the meaning, scope, and applications of epidemiology to the practice of public health and the uses of statistics for the scientific appraisal and dissemination of public health data. PUBH 5304.  Environmental Health.  

Environmental Health. This core course examines how current environmental factors seriously impact human health. The course combines public health and systems thinking perspectives to understand the associations among environmental risk factors, human health and environmental health disparities. Students will use new knowledge to consider risk assessment and management, and how to influence decision making and policy development. Students will be required to apply systems knowledge under a global perspective and to design interventions for mitigating common regional and global communities environmental risk factors.

PUBH 5305: Biostatistics in Public Health. Core course focuses on the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of public health data. Overview of measurement methods, descriptive statistics, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing, sample size and power calculations, analysis of variance and multiple comparisons; correlation and regression; multiple regression and statistical control of confounding; logistic regression; and survival analysis. PUBH 5321: Responding to Chronic and Infectious Diseases in Hispanic and Border Communities. Introduction to basic principles of chronic and infectious disease prevention and control. Emphasis on diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and TB. Critical analysis of the magnitude, distribution, risk factors, and public health significance of selected chronic and infectious diseases in community and institutional settings.
