Scholarly Writing for Education (3-0) This course supports student's scholarly writing and their ethical use of digital databases and generative AI. Students analyze published literature reviews for the features of academic writing and engage in writing exercises that help them produce these features in their own writing. The instructional focus within this practice includes: conceptualization, argumentation, research evidence, writing style, mechanics, and citation. Peer and faculty feedback support student's writing and their formulation of a topic for scholarly inquiry.

Quantitative Research I (3-0). Introduction to empirical inquiry, including descriptive statistics, methods of inference, and hypothesis testing. Purposes of this course include gaining a basic graduate level understanding of experimental designs and statistical procedures used in education and other social sciences, obtaining the knowledge and skill necessary to be an informed and competent consumer and user of educational research, and ability to competently design a preliminary quantitative research study. Quantitative Research II (3-0). An in-depth examination of quantitative research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation of statistical software (i.e., SPSS) on simulated and real data sets. The course include a brief review of scientific theory building, univariate and multivariate procedures and their applications across relevant experimental designs and educational disciplines along with an emphasis on individual student needs by critically evaluating published research. In this course, students outline the major components of their contextualized inquiry of practice study through the creation of a Dissertation in Practice Proposal. Students are expected to demonstrate a range of academic skills, including the ability to: frame an applied educational research question; undertake a focused literature review; identify an appropriate theoretical lens and research design given an applied research question; and define the type of analysis that makes possible the reaching of conclusions. Passing of this course qualifies students for doctoral candidacy.
