Approaches to teaching social studies in elementary schools. Includes setting goals for instruction and content, teaching techniques and methods of evaluation. Theory and practice are integrated through field-based experiences in local schools. Emphasis on individual differences, application of learning theories, curriculum development, and understanding of state and national standards for social studies.

Internship in Elementary and Middle School I (3-0-30) One semester of teaching in the classroom. Observation by the university instructor of the candidate's classroom teaching and seminars designed to relate the classroom instructional situation to corresponding instructional theory.

ELED 4690. Student Teaching in EC-6.

Students seeking an EC-6 certification area outside of Bilingual Education in the teacher preparation program enroll in ELED 4690 for required student teaching, which is the culmination of the program. Students are assigned to complete their student teaching in schools that house grades EC-6. Fieldwork consists of assisting in student-centered classroom instruction for a minimum of fifteen weeks for the entire school day.
