Master of Music with Concentration in Conducting

Specific Requirements for the Master of Music: Thesis Track

  1. A bachelor's degree in Music or its equivalent with certification to teach Music in the public schools, or significant and equivalent professional teaching experience.
  2. Acceptance into the music education program via
    1. the approval of a three-person panel of area faculty after appropriate interviews and/or teaching demonstration;
    2. submission of undergraduate official transcript;
    3. two letters of recommendation; and
    4. written philosophy of teaching

No recital is required in this particular Music Education program. This thesis sequence includes the submission of a research thesis on a pedagogical topic. A final oral examination on the thesis is also
required.

Master of Music

The Master of Music degree is offered in two majors:

  1. Performance (instrumental, vocal, conducting, theory, or composition), which specializes in the study of a performing medium; and
  2. Music Education, which is designed for advanced training in the teaching profession.

Non-Thesis Track

  1. A bachelor’s degree in Music or its equivalent with certification to teach Music in the public schools, or significant and equivalent professional teaching experience.
  2. Acceptance into the music education program via
    1. the approval of a three-person panel of area faculty after appropriate interviews and/or teaching demonstration;
    2. submission of undergraduate official transcript;
    3. two letters of recommendation; and
    4. written philosophy of teaching.
  3. Completion of the following required courses with a B or above:

No thesis is required in this particular Music Education track. This sequence of classes can be completed in two regular semesters plus two summer semesters of study (2+2). A comprehensive written exam can be required at the conclusion of all coursework.
