Master of Music

The Master of Music degree is offered in two majors:

  1. Performance (instrumental, vocal, conducting, theory, or composition), which specializes in the study of a performing medium; and
  2. Music Education, which is designed for advanced training in the teaching profession.

Specific Requirements for the Master of Music in Performance

  1. A bachelor's degree in Music or its equivalent.
  2. Acceptance into the performance program via
    1. audition with a three-person panel of area faculty;
    2. vocal majors must demonstrate knowledge of Italian, French, German, Latin, and English diction;
    3. submission of undergraduate official transcript;
    4. two letters of recommendation; and
    5. written statement of intent.

The performance sequence requires either:

  1. a master’s recital and written thesis documenting that recital;
  2. two performance recitals; or
  3. a full theoretical thesis of composition plus analysis. A final examination is also required. All graduate recitals must be attended by three graduate music faculty members, two of whom must be from the student’s applied area. The attending graduate faculty members will judge the recitals as pass/fail, as part of the degree requirements.
